Quick guide to conservation online

RESEARCH & LEARNING:
starting off with the IHBC’s web resources!

Research resources lie at the heart of student or trainee learning and research needs, but it also rounds off practical experience you may be gaining as a volunteer!
The IHBC’s NewsBlog service carries news and links to essential conservation matters, but it also relays news on a huge range of related built and historic environment developments and opportunities from across the UK and beyond. If you want to find out what’s going on, or where you might seek experience, this is the place to start.
We’ve been doing this since 2008 and have posted more than 6000 items on our NewsBlog already, so searching here can be a great starting point for general enquiries on research topics as well as to find out what is happening now!
SEARCH THE IHBC’s NEWSBLOG

We even have a ‘Global News’ page to which you can contribute links, and really play a part in raising awareness of conservation issues.
GLOBAL NEWS

Conservation requires input from many different disciplines, so we need to have a very practical approach to the development of standards, policy and guidance. For this reason much IHBC policy is formalised in our consultation responses, and your explorations often may usefully begin here.
The need for interdisciplinary agreement in conservation policy and standards, and the limited resources available, means that our policy and standards are developed in wide-ranging consultation responses.

The IHBC’s membership journal Context is the sector’s primary resource for current built and historic environment principles, practice and standards.
We post both articles AND issues online, to allow for different research requirements.

Technical and practical conservation information is also made available to users.
GUIDANCE NOTES

Our technical bibliography deals with the detailed technical and scientific aspects of conservation.
We are still working on this resource, so it is only a partial list of publications that might be of use.
IHBC’S TECHNICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY

IHBC carries out and publishes research work as a consultancy, but it also supports and advises on a wide range of research by other bodies, including government departments, non-governmental organisations and the third sector.
Relevant research papers by IHBC and our many partners are carried on our website direct or through news links.

IHBC’s Annual Schools are the highpoint of the IHBC’s calendar of support for sector training and networking, so be sure to check out bursary and other funding opportunities, across both national and Branch operations.
Our School web pages also host material from previous Annual Schools, all of which are themed around subjects such as ‘sustainability’, ‘excellence’, ‘skills’ and ‘significance’ and have their web sites and select reports archived online, while our journal Context carries full reports on the previous School each September.

CONTEXT ONLINE

Our Branches often also host material from Branch events.
Major Branch conferences are often featured in Context, so a search through the Context archive may help find the information you want. However our Context Article search does not usually include event reports, so you would need the date of a conference to track down the report.

The IHBC’s online Calendar is also maintained as an archive of events for research purposes.
A search of the text in our calendar can help you find previous events related your research!

We also carry links to books by our members.
Our members include some of the most substantial authorities in their field so we encourage them to let others know about their books using our dedicated web page.

Our Annual Gus Astley Student Award also offers a survey of current research by, mostly, post-graduate students working on historic, conservation and design topics, and searching our online list of entries since it started in 2007 may also provide useful sources.
To gain access to original work listed here you will need to contact the host institution direct, as currently the IHBC cannot help track down material.

Our links to a wide range of web resources and partners help researchers access a vast virtual library of information.
The links are wide-ranging and very diverse, like the discipline of conservation, so take a little time to familiarise yourself with what is there.

Of course we cannot carry all the information necessary for your work on our site, so always be sure to explore wider links.
We are always delighted to hear about new resources that have not yet made it to our listings.
